Snake Plant guide

Meet the Snake Plant (Sansevieria), a resilient and visually striking houseplant with long, upright leaves that resemble the slithering reptile it's named after. Also known as the "Mother-in-Law's Tongue," this green companion is not only aesthetically pleasing but boasts air-purifying qualities, making it a perfect addition to any indoor space.

Care Instructions:

Light:

  • Snake plants are adaptable and can thrive in various light conditions. They do well in indirect light but can also tolerate low light and some direct sunlight.
  • Ideally, place your snake plant near a window with filtered sunlight or in a location with bright, indirect light.

Watering:

  • Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Snake plants are susceptible to overwatering, so it's crucial not to let the soil stay consistently moist.
  • Water sparingly, approximately every 2-4 weeks, depending on the humidity and temperature of your environment.

Soil:

  • Use well-draining soil mix specifically designed for succulents or cacti. A mixture of potting soil and perlite or sand works well to provide the right balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Temperature and Humidity:

  • Snake plants prefer temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. They can tolerate a range of temperatures but should be protected from frost.
  • They are adaptable to different humidity levels and can thrive in both dry and humid conditions.

Fertilization:

  • Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Dilute the fertilizer to half strength and apply it once every 4-6 weeks.

Potting:

  • Repot your snake plant when it outgrows its current container, typically every 1-2 years. Use fresh potting mix and choose a container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Pruning:

  • Trim any yellow or damaged leaves close to the soil using clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. Regular pruning can help maintain a tidy appearance.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Snake plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases, but they can occasionally be affected by spider mites or mealybugs. Keep an eye on the plant and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Air Circulation:

  • Good air circulation is beneficial for snake plants. Ensure that the plant has some space around it to prevent the development of mold or mildew.

Pets and Children:

  • Snake plants are mildly toxic if ingested. Keep them out of reach of pets and children. If ingested, contact your local poison control center immediately.

By following these care instructions, you can help your Snake Plant thrive and enhance the aesthetics of your indoor space.
